City holds meeting on future cultural center

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The new Cultural Arts Center is much closer to reality after a decade in the making.

It will be at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Oglethorpe Avenue on the site of a parking lot.

Last week, the city had their initial team meeting on the arts center project. They will be holding more meetings to meeting to decide what they want the spaces to be like and what kind of programs they will need.

A design firm will come up with three conceptual designs for what will take over this parking lot.

"It has been a vacant lot for many, many years. We are really excited about the location. It is right across the street from the SCAD museum [and] the Johnny Mercer Theater is on the other side. It will really complete a whole cultural area for our downtown," said Marty Johnston, of the city of Savannah.

There is $17 million in the current special local option sales tax designated to the project. Johnston said the building could possibly be finished in two years.
