BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

New traffic signal masts are going to be installed by late October on Charles Street intersections in Beaufort.

The traffic lights are going up at these Charles Street intersections: Boundary, Craven and Bay streets, according to the South Carolina Dept. of Transportation.

The new traffic signals feature double-arm mast poles and are less prone to wind damage than lights hung from cables, according to the city. As soon as steel rebar for the pole foundations is delivered, crews will begin installation, according to the city.

The cost of the project is more than $300,000, which is being shared between SCDOT, Beaufort County traffic engineering and the city. The city is paying $55,009.
