Joanne Stewart has been participating in synchronized swimming since the 1950s. Joanne Stewart has been participating in synchronized swimming since the 1950s.

There was no need for Joanne Stewart to jump into a new hobby upon moving to Sun City. She has simply continued a passion for one she's been active in since the 1950s.

"I think,'' said Stewart, "I've been a fish all my life.''

Stewart has been involved in synchronized swimming since she was 12, when she happened into the sport at Detroit's Women's City Club.

"Well, I tried racing and I chased everyone across the finish line,'' said Stewart. "And I tried diving  but then I couldn't see the end of the board. And so, then when synchronized swimming was introduced, I joined that.''

And what she really got herself into was a lifetime in the pool and in character, from Peter Pan to Joan of Arc to Scotch in Water.

"In the Washington D.C. area,'' she said, "I joined the masters synchronized swimming group there and competed and I did String of Pearls and won the national duet in my age group.''

Since moving to Sun City six years ago, Stewart has been active in the Synchronettes at the Bluffton community.

"It's like a sorority,'' she said. "Except we're older.''

But Stewart keeps feeling young with the club's training, which leads up to an annual performance each march.

"I enjoy performing,'' said Stewart. "It's nerve-wracking, but it's fun.''

Stewart also spends time making the costumes for her performances and is a fulltime caregiver to her husband. But, as she has for six decades, she'll always make time for synchronized swimming.

"It's something you can continue doing,'' she said.
