HHI library closes after pipe burst causes flooding

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

A pipe burst overnight at the Hilton Head Island library on Beach City Road, flooding part of the building and damaging thousands of books.

These are just two of the countless books that were destroyed after this morning's flood inside the Hilton Head library.

Thousands of paperback books were damaged.

Three areas in particular - the lobby, the children's reading room and the Friends of the Library room - sustained the most water damage.

"I almost cried because the shop in the front was full of water and all the books that they have to sell to people which makes money for the library were ruined," said Mary Jo Berkes, Hilton Head Island Library Branch Manager.

Early Tuesday afternoon, the county decided to close it down for safety reasons.

Employees with ServPro are working around the clock to clean the floors and dry out the carpets at the Library. Employees are planning to reopen at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The county is still trying to assess just how much damage there is and how much money it will cost to fix it.
