The announcement of JetBlue coming to the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport has sparked a lot of positive discussion in both the Coastal Empire and the Lowcountry.
The Hilton Head Chamber of Commerce said the airline's arrival means endless possibilities for the island and incoming revenue.
"Yesterday, after the announcement was made our website doubled the number of hits that we usually see in a day," said Chamber President and CEO Bill Miles. "So there tremendous excitement about JetBlue and what it means for this island."
The chamber said the island brings in more than $2 million in revenue each year, and with this announcement, they're expecting that to double or even triple.
"It allows us to tweak our marketing plan a little bit and go a little deeper into the New York area and try to bring some of those visitors here to spend some time with us," said Miles.
The carrier will offer two flights daily to JFK. Also, JetBlue's presence will increase competition at the airport. Airport officials say that has been their goal for many years.
JetBlue is supposed to start flying from the airport by Feb. 13. Perhaps the best news for travelers is the carrier is offering fares as low as $79 one way.
