Chrisman verdict will change officers' behavior, former cop says

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

He's the Phoenix cop, who may have just changed the way every police officer approaches a dangerous situation.

Just hours after a Maricopa County jury convicted former Phoenix police officer Richard Chrisman of aggravated assault Tuesday, stemming from a 2010 confrontation that left Danny Rodriguez dead, reaction is pouring in about the impact the case will have on the law enforcement community.

Paul Penzone is an ex-cop, who served more than 20 years with the Phoenix Police Department.

He told CBS5 News that this case will force officers to reevaluate the steps they take on almost every kind of police call.

"Now you know the possibility exists that if you make a bad decision, if you're reckless or over aggressive, you will face justice, face the law and the outcome might not be pretty," said Penzone.

Penzone said that he considers the Chrisman verdict to be a wake-up call to officers everywhere, and the verdict will eventually make officers better at their jobs, because they now know they'll be held even more accountable.

Christopher Corso is a former prosecutor, who expects law enforcement agencies across the country to start reevaluating their policies and procedures.

"Because it's a police officer, because it's on the job and nothing off-duty, this will gain national attention," said Corso.  "I think this will affect the way departments handle things."

Penzone also said that he hopes this case will also encourage frontline police supervisors to get more involved in calls than they've been in the past.

More oversight will decrease the chances of something like what happened in Officer Chrisman's case, to happen again, Penzone said.
