18-month-old dies in Winder fire, 3 taken to hospital

Fire investigators said an 18-month-old girl died in an early morning house fire in Winder.

A 50-year-old man and two females believed to be his 16- and 22-year-old daughters were airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital with what investigators describe as serious burns.

Barrow County fire officials told CBS Atlanta the fire started at a home located at Rockwell Church Road and Moons Bridge Road just after 2 a.m. Wednesday.

A couple who lives down the street from the fire said the 22-year-old, who has an 18-month-old daughter, ran up to their house screaming.

"She said she thought her baby was in the house and I said, 'What did it look like where the baby was at?'" said Mike Chambers, who called 911. "She said it was on fire.  And I said, 'Oh my God.'"

Chambers said both of the women were badly burned and could not get back into the burning house to rescue the child.

Firefighters said the intense smoke and flames also prevented them from moving in to search for the baby.

"It's heartbreaking to know that before we even got here, there was no hope for that infant," said Lt. Scott Dakin of Barrow County Emergency Services. " Emotionally it's a very hard fire.  It is a very hard thing to do."

A cause of the fire was not immediately determined, but Dakin said it does not appear suspicious.
