Arrest made in Baker Co. murder

A Baker County man with a lengthy criminal past is back in jail, this time charged with the murder of an elderly Baker County man.

Ulysses Blackshear, Junior was arrested on murder charges a week after 87-year-old William Land was found dead inside his Newton home.

A welfare check September 10th at the home of William Land would be the start of a week-long murder investigation.

"It included following up on leads we along with the Newton Police Department and the Baker County Sheriff's Office had received," said  GBI Special Agent in Charge Agent Kim Baker. "Upon putting that information together and looking at the evidence that we have, it resulted in the arrest of Ulysses Blackshear, Jr."

Blackshear was already being held in the Dougherty County Jail at the time of his arrest. GBI agents aren't saying how the 44-year-old convicted felon knew Land, only they both lived in Newton.

But according to the department of corrections Blackshear had a violent past. He had served four stints in prison since 1989, most recently for a 2007 robbery and aggravated assault committed in Dougherty County.

It appears that robbery may have been the motive here.  Baker said Land was an innocent victim.

Last Friday agents served a warrant on a West Broad Avenue home in Newton searching for evidence. They wouldn't say if that house was in anyway linked to Blackshear or what was recovered. They also aren't releasing how Land was killed.

If convicted of murder, Blackshear could look at spending the rest of his life in prison. William Land had worked for both the city of Newton and Baker County.

Newton Police and the Baker County Sheriff's Office assisted the GBI with the investigation.
