NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

North Charleston police have arrested man they say kidnapped and robbed a teen who was trying to buy a cell phone during a Craigslist rendezvous last week.

According to an incident report, the kidnapping happened last Friday around 1:45 p.m. in the Waffle House parking lot on Aviation Avenue.

The 19-year-old told investigators she saw an ad for a Galaxy cell phone on Craigslist, and after reaching out to the phone number and speaking with a female, she agreed to meet her in the parking lot. But when she got to the parking lot, it wasn’t a woman with a cell phone she met, but a man with a handgun.

Police say the man was 28-year-old Chavias Jenkins.

Investigators say Jenkins walked into the parking lot from the adjacent Kangaroo gas station and ordered the victim into her car, a 2003 Jaguar, at gunpoint. Jenkins then ordered the teen into the passenger’s seat before seating himself behind the wheel.

Jenkins then drove the victim through several North Charleston streets before eventually ordering her to exit the vehicle on Twitty Street under Interstate 526. Jenkins told her he would shoot her if she turned around, according to the victim.

The victim said Jenkins drove off towards Russeldale Avenue, so she ran towards Margarette Street and made contact with a citizen, borrowing a telephone to call 911.

Police say Jenkins stole $370 in cash and her AT&T slide cell phone before ditching her vehicle in the parking lot of the Lakewood Apartments, located at 1934 Kerry Street.

Investigators later received a tip Jenkins was staying at his mother’s house on Amy Drive in Goose Creek. Police posted patrols near the home and saw Jenkins climb into a red GMC Envoy and drive off around 1 p.m. Tuesday. They later pulled him over in the parking lot of Tread Quarters on Highway 52 and took him into custody.

Jenkins is charged with carjacking, kidnapping, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
