EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A pit bull is in the custody of Effingham County Sheriff's Office after biting an 8-year-old girl who remains in the hospital. The dog is now under a 10-day quarantine while investigators determine if he's still dangerous.

The pit bull named Bouncer has been at Effingham County Humane Society since Friday after it bit Tori Menius on her arm.

Investigators say they are running tests to see if there are any other issues with the dog that may have triggered the attack.

The owner has relinquished his right to the dog, turning it over the Effingham County Sheriff's Office, even though investigators say the owner was not at fault and there will be no criminal charges.

The dog was tied to a tree in the owner's yard, which investigators say is legal in Effingham County.

"Somehow the dog was provoked," said David Ehsanipoor, spokesman for the Effingham County Sheriff's Office. "We don't believe somebody sicked the dog on this girl to attack her. It appears the dog was provoked by some children."

Ehsanipoor said the dog must be quarantined for 10 days, but they won't know until then what they will do with the dog. H said that more than likely it will have to be put to sleep.
