Savannah-Chatham Metro Police will be opening a substation Friday in Savannah's Historic District.
City Market contributed the 1,200 square foot, second-story office for the substation. It will be used as working space for officers patrolling the City Market area.
"The crowds have been growing steadily, and City Market realizes they have become the center of the nightlife on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. We - coming in and out of this facility - maybe [will] provide a sense of security they felt was lacking," said Capt. Mike Wilkins, the Downtown Precinct commander.
Officers say the loft offices give them a helpful view of both City Market and the busy intersection of Broughton and Jefferson streets near the busy McDonald's walk-up window.
