SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A trail-blazing Savannahian has died.

Dr. Harris K. Lentini passed away Wednesday morning. The career educator was an active volunteer with numerous organizations. One organization that was very dear to her was the American Association of University Women. She served as director at Oatland Island.  

Lentini was inaugurated on Nov. 2, 1978, as the first female alderman elected by voters for the Savannah City Council. She served one term from Nov. 2, 1978 to Oct. 4, 1982) under Mayor John Rousakis, representing the 6th District.

The only other woman to serve on the City Council up until this time was Sarah Berrien Casey Morgan, who was elected by the City Council to fill the unexpired term of George R. White in 1923. She served for only four days and her term represented an honorary measure.

She and three other courageous women founded the Safe Shelter for victims of domestic abuse in the late 1970s. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. 

Lentini was 75.
