Chehaw re-accredited for 5 more years

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Chehaw's Wild Animal Park is one of three zoos in Georgia accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.  They just got re-accredited for five more years.

Chehaw's Executive Director says the zoo went through a detailed exam to earn the certificate.

"Everything to do with the Zoo. the animal collection. How we care for the animals. The education programming, the finances, safety and security. It's a very comprehensive program," said Doug Porter Executive Director.

Without accreditation, Chehaw would not be able to have Cheetahs' and primates at their Zoo.

Chehaw meet with AZA in Kansas City last week and passed the high standards with flying colors.

"It forces us to achieve a level of excellence. Everyone wants to be the best at what they do," said Doug Porter.

Even though Chehaw applies for accreditation every five years, they work year round to keep their zoo up to par and remain a member of the association.

"We're a small zoo in a small town. We're competing with the like of Zoo Atlanta and New York and San Diego. Those are accredited zoos as well. And the standards aren't any less for us," said Doug Porter.

Porter says the challenging process was made easier with the support of city officials and Chehaw workers.

Doug Porter says the city supports Chehaw financially and he considers them important partners with Chehaw.
