Congressman Bishop fighting for pecan industry

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The pecans are growing at Century Pecan grove, after a long wet summer here in South Georgia

"Well the rain we had earlier this year was good for the crops, they all needed the water, one of the bad things about the rain is you didn't have a lot of sun during those periods but now the suns come out and it's really helping the trees a lot," said Jesse Pollock, operator, Century Pecan Grove.

Many of the pecans produced at Century Grove are shipped overseas.

"We send thousands of pounds each year to China," said Pollock.

They'd like to export a lot more to India, but growers say that country puts an unfair 36% tariff on American pecans while the tariff on other nuts is just 10%. That's something Congressman Sanford Bishop is working to change.

"India's got a growing economy and it's going to have a potential a very large market going forward as it grows its middle class and it will be a great export opportunity for Georgia peanut growers and American growers," said Said Sanford Bishop, Congressman, U.S. House of Representatives.

Jesse Pollock, an operator here at Century Pecan says lowering the tariff rate in India would certainly help his company and south Georgia's economy.

"Anytime you can sell product for a better price, it also brings up help for the business and for employees and that money spreads out to the economy of the surrounding counties," said Pollock.

Pecan producers must now just wait to see if Congressman Bishop's push has positive results.
