Americus man asks for tutor to learn to read

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

An Americus man who has struggled with reading and writing his entire life has been looking for help for several years. He says he just wants a reliable tutor.

Nathaniel Thomas says his literacy problems hold him back. He believes that education is the key to success, and he doesn't want anyone else to experience the challenges he faces every day.

Thomas reads at a second grade level and can only write his name. He has no job and has struggled to find a tutor. Nathaniel Thomas "I'm trying so hard, I just cant find a reliable tutor. He did get some tutoring through the library in Americus, but the director of that program says they have too many people who need help and not enough tutors to give Thomas the help he needs.

Diya Felton said  "Nathaniel is having a problem of having a committed teacher to help him out." Thomas moved to Columbus a year ago and joined a literacy program there but came back to Americus to be closer to home.

"I was in a classroom and then I did classes on line they don't have none of that here and its hard for anybody to learn how to read if don't nobody really wanna volunteer."

His lack of reading has gotten so bad that people around town know his personal business Nathaniel "you know I had to let people read my mail, just about everybody in Americus know my business. Probably know my social security number because I had to let people read my mail."

Diya Felton said, "I'm hoping to see that we can find a committed tutor for him that will help him exceed and excel in his learning and reading abilities."

Thomas says he isn't ashamed of his reading ability and wants to use his story to help others. Thomas "I'm doing the best I can, maybe I can help somebody else whose having the struggles I'm having. Thomas has this message for the community "I'm looking in the camera begging any tutor to come and help me."

He says he wants to be an advocate for literacy once he gains a higher reading level.

Thomas says he reached out to South Georgia Technical College but got nowhere. College officials tell us they don't turn anyone away from their adult literacy program and are now trying to help Nathaniel Thomas find a tutor.
