GA gun rights group raffles off assault rifles

In the wake of the shootings at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC, a gun rights group in Georgia is raffling off two assault rifles.

"We want more AR-15s in the hands of Georgia Gun Owners who want nothing more than to protect their life, liberty and property from the actions of criminals and thugs," said Patrick Parsons, executive director of Georgia Gun Owners.

The AR-15 is lightweight and capable of firing up to 30 rounds without reloading.

"A lot of people blame it on the gun," said Roman Lopez, a clerk at Wild West Traders in Marietta. "It's not the gun itself. It's the person behind the gun that makes it bad."

The raffle has sparked debate from those on both sides of the gun rights issue.

"As public safety is getting cut back, budget cuts, there's less police presence, less support services out there for the community," said Glen Stewart, who supports gun ownership. "Just like your health, you have to take responsibility for yourself."

Others disagreed that arming people is the answer.

"The police are there to keep the guns, to use it if need be," said Raymond Omorodion. "For the citizens, I think it should be taken out of our hands."

Georgia Gun Owners will sign people up for the raffle at gun shows across Georgia in the next several weeks.

The giveaway ends on Oct. 30.
