Census: Nearly 1 in 3 Savannahians live in poverty

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

If you feel like you're working harder and falling farther behind, you're not alone.

According to statistics released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, 28.6 percent of Savannahians -- nearly one in three -- live at or below the poverty threshold.

That's $23,550 per year or less for a family of four.

Earlier this week, the Census Bureau released national numbers that show 15 percent of the country lives in poverty.

Those statistics show more people slipping into poverty all over the country, while the number of people in the middle and upper classes either decreases or stays flat.

Daniel Dodd-Ramirez, director of the anti-poverty nonprofit Step Up Savannah, says education is the key to escaping poverty.

"If you drop out of high school, you're almost guaranteed not to have a job," he said. "And we have 35,000 people who don't have GEDs in Chatham County."
