A Hilton Head Island High School teacher was named Friday as the Beaufort County's 2013-2014 District Teacher of the Year.
Kristen Karszes is a tenth grade English teacher at the high school. She has taught at Hilton Head Island High since 2005.
After the announcement, Martha Hartley, chief financial officer of Hilton Head Buick GMC Cadillac, offered Karszes her choice of a new Buick Verano, a GMC Terrain Denali SUV or a Cadillac ATS donated by the dealership for her use over the coming year.
Prior to arriving at Hilton Head Island High in 2005, she taught at H.E. McCracken Middle School in Bluffton from 2004-2005 and from 1994-2003 at schools in Texas.
Karszes' described her teaching philosophy as one that aims to move each child forward in his or her educational journey, according to the Beaufort County School District news release.
Karszes chairs the English Professional Learning Community at Hilton Head Island High, has served on the English Benchmark Writing team, curriculum mapping writing team and is the middle years coordinator for years four and five in the International Baccalaureate Program.
Karszes will represent Beaufort County in the South Carolina State Teacher of the Year program. Finalists for the state program will be announced in February.
Becoming District Teacher of the Year is a three-step process that begins when teachers of the year are selected in April. District Teacher of the Year applications are submitted at the end of July.
