The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept.'s
Downtown Precinct officers will be working to unite west Savannah neighborhoods
Unity in the Community will be held from
1-3 p.m. Saturday at the city's Fellwood Park. There will be a mini job fair,
inflatable bounce houses for children, snow cones, cotton candy, a cookout and
mini job fair.
There will also be a confidential
question-and-answer session about cases by the Chatham County District
Attorney's Office and Metro Criminal Investigations Division detectives.
Precinct Cmdr. Capt. Mike Wilkins'
goal is to unite the West Savannah, Hudson Hill, Sustainable Fellwood and Bay
Street-Viaduct neighborhoods with each other and the officers assigned to that
area, according to a police news release. He will be recognizing neighborhood and
community leaders in the area.
"These are neighborhoods where we
have a tremendous opportunity to build the relationships between our officers
and the residents," said Wilkins, in a statement. ‘We have had four homicides
so far this year and quite a number of other crimes that can leave residents
uneasy. Many are unaware of the many services available to them. This event is
designed to address those issues."
The Savannah Impact Program is a combined
effort of SCMPD, probation, parole and juvenile justice officers and the
district attorney's office. SIP will be offering the mini job fair. The program
works with probationers and parolees to reduce recidivism, by offering job training
