Police investigate fatal crash in Hinesville

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

One person is dead and 8 others were injured after a 4-vehicle wreck in Hinesville.

The crash happened around 10:15 p. m. Saturday on General Screven Way near Stafford Street. Witnesses tell police that a car went to pass two vehicles and when they attempted to cross back into the lane, the driver lost control striking two vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.

The crash caused one of the vehicles to catch fire. One driver was trapped and rescue crews had to use the Jaws of Life to pull him from the wreckage. The man was rushed to an area hospital and from there he was transfered to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah where he died from his injuries.

Police say 6 others were taken to area hospitals. One did not seek medical treatment. The condition of the other victims has not been released.

Officials say most of the injuries to the others involved were bruises and lacerations from the accident.

The wreck is under investigation.
