Vigil held for SSU shooting victim

Family and friends mourning a young man shot and killed at Savannah State University. Folks gathered off campus to pray and remember Donald Lewis who was murdered late Friday night.

Lewis is the fourth person in his family to lose his life from gun violence. His family says all of the cases remain unsolved but they are hopeful that someone will come forward.

"It's just so sad," said Rhonda Hudson, the victim's grandmother.

It was an emotional evening for family and friends as they gathered to remember the 20 year old who was gunned down on campus. He was not a student but his family says he had a lot of friends who were.

"He was just an all around good guy and it's sad that he had to go out through violence instead of sickness or old age," said Nishika Clark, Lewis' cousin.

Death by violence is all too familiar for this family.

"Two in the same neighborhood, the other spread out but they are all unsolved homicides," said Clark.  "They are not dying from old age; they are not dying from car wrecks; they are dying from guns."

Holding posters not only for Lewis but for all of their loved ones, taking a moment to pray and ask  help.

"We are gathered here because we are concerned about the safety of our children," said Hudson.

A family that has already lost four are worried that more lives are in danger.

"I would like for the community to get together to talk to their children, to convince them that violence is not the answer," said Hudson.

The GBI is still investigating, if you have any information please call (912) 871-1121.
