SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Many are weighing in privately about the controversy surrounding Police Chief Willie Lovett.

Earlier this month, discrimination lawsuits were filed by two police majors.  Many say the filing doesn't come as a surprise.

Lovett's training officer John White is the last living of the nine African-American officers who integrated the department in 1947. White lives on the same street where Lovett grew up and has known the chief since he was a teenager.

"He always wanted to be a police officer, and I trained him. I was one of his training officers. And I was proud of him when he became chief of police because he inherited some of the principals that I instilled in him as a police officer. Now, some of the things he may have gotten into I know nothing of," White said.

He said he is sad to watch this happen at the height of Lovett's career.
