HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

In the Lowcountry, the partial government shutdown could affect the Hilton Head Island airport tower.

So far the county has not received any updates as to whether or not the tower will still operate if there is a government shutdown. Employees have been told to report to work as usual Tuesday morning.

Earlier this year, the Hilton Head Island airport tower was one of 149 airport towers that the Federal Aviation Administration was planning to close because of sequestration costs.

The FAA was eventually able to find the money to continue to keep it open but only until September 30th.

Officials say even if the tower did close, it wouldn't be detrimental because the airport operated without one up until 2004.

"So if the FAA tells us that their budget is slashed or they don't have a budget as of tomorrow, they could tell us that the tower is going to close. But again, we haven't received any official word on if the tower's going to close tomorrow morning if they don't come to an agreement," said Joy Nelson, Beaufort County Public Information Officer.

The Hilton Head Island airport tower is operated by Robinson Aviation out of Oklahoma City.

US Airways is currently the only commercial airline that flies in and out of the Hilton Head airport.
