Traffic diverted on W. Bay Street due to chemical spill

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Traffic on West Bay Street in Savannah is being diverted to Augusta Avenue as Savannah Fire and Rescue and environmental crews work to clean up a chemical spill.

Officials say a truck leaked about 15 to 20 gallons of sulfuric acid early Tuesday morning at Old West Lathrop Avenue and Bay Street.

The spill was contained to the street only, and crews are in the clean-up process.

Savannah-Chatham Metro officers are diverting traffic on West Bay to Augusta Avenue and Graham Streets. The detour is expected to last until at least 8:30 a.m.

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes if possible or to expect delays. If driving in the area, use caution and slow down.

We will continue to follow road conditions in the area. Check WTOC.com and WTOC on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
