Phoebe Putney lays off 33 'leadership' positions

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Officials at Phoebe Putney Health System announced they have eliminated 33 leadership positions across all locations of the Phoebe system. It's part of a management-level reorganization that began in August.

According to a release, Phoebe President and CEO Joel Wernick sent a letter to employees detailing the layoffs.

Wernick blames the need for restructuring on the current "economic outlook" for the company.

Phoebe says company leaders laid off have priority consideration for other open positions within Phoebe.

Chief Financial Officer of Phoebe said changes in regulations and reimbursement have impacted operations, including sequestration, which is expected to cost the health system $5 million this fiscal year.

Phoebe also blames the drastic changes on Georgia's election not to expand Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act, as millions of mostly federal dollars will not be available for the treatment of Georgians.

Hospital officials say the high number of uninsured residents in southwest Georgia increases the impact of what the hospital is experiencing.

The hospital system did not immediately name any employees who were eliminated.
