BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

The government shutdown could make it harder for many families to put food on the table.  Particularly families that rely on WIC, the food service for woman, infants, and children.

South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control say WIC benefits will run out in two weeks, and that has quite a few mothers upset.

"I think it's ridiculous because there are very few things that we can use nowadays to advance us financially and that's definitely one of them," said Nakia Dase.

According to DHEC, more than 120,000 South Carolinians currently depend on WIC, and more than 26,000 of them are from the Lowcountry .

Dase is one of those people.

"Its a tremendous help," she said. "They offer a lot of things. When it comes down to WIC you get your voucher and then you go and you get the things essential for your kids' health."

She received WIC for her 7-year-old son for the first five years of his life, and now she gets it for her daughter. She said she can't afford to lose these benefits.

"It's not fair," she said.

The money will last until October 15.  If you still have your WIC vouchers you can keep using them, and stores will honor them for at least two more weeks.
