Contractor removes remaining facades in historic Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - There's a large vacant space in downtown Georgetown after a contractor removed the remaining facades from last week's fire that raced through the city's shopping and dining district.

A contractor removed the five remaining facades of buildings damaged in the fire Thursday while hundreds of people watched.

The Sept. 25 fire along the city's historic Front Street waterfront gutted seven buildings. The facades of the other two buildings collapsed over the weekend. City officials said the others had to be removed because they were unstable.

The fire put 130 people out of work and displaced nearly 10 families who were living in apartments above the buildings.
