Growing number of scooter thefts plague Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police has issued a warning of a growing number of motor scooter thefts.

Thirty-six scooters have been reported stolen in the SCMPD's jurisdiction, 30 of which have been reported since June 1.

Of the 36 stolen, only seven had been secured with a locking device.

"These scooters are growing in popularity, but they are relatively easy for thieves to pick up and steal," said Acting Chief Julie Tolbert. "Many of the victims of these thefts are those who can least afford to lose them."

Police advice operators to lock scooters using a chain or cable to a fixed object when not in use.
