Historic Savannah neighborhood adding new garden

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - One of Savannah's historic neighborhoods is breaking ground on a new addition - a community garden that will spruce up a vacant lot.

Mayor Edna Jackson will join members of Savannah's Victorian Neighborhood Association on Thursday for a sign-unveiling ceremony to launch the garden project. The Victorian district, made up of picturesque homes built in the late 1800s, is located just south of the National Historic Landmark district where Savannah was founded in 1733.

Savannah officials launched the community gardens program last year to help beautify neglected areas of Georgia's oldest city. It identified vacant lots on city-owned property where residents and community organizations could establish gardens after signing agreements with City Hall.
