ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A judge sentenced a Fairburn woman Thursday for the murder of an 11-month-old boy who was in her care.

Maria Owens, 44, was sentenced to 10 years for the death of 11-month-old Jaylen Kelly.

According to court records, emergency crews responded to the home of 3051 Broadleaf Trail in Fairburn on June 1, 2011, on a report of an unresponsive child.

Paramedics took Jaylen Kelly to Piedmont Fayette Hospital. He was then airlifted to Children's Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston, where he later died.

After the incident, Owens told detectives she struck the baby a few times on his side to help him "clear his cough." She claimed he later began to gasp and then became unresponsive.

At trial last week, several medical professionals testified that the baby was killed by an extremely hard blow to the back resulting in a fractured spine. The medical examiner said the cause of death was blunt force trauma which resulted in massive internal bleeding.
