Effingham County Jail implements virtual visitation

Posted: Updated:
EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Starting Monday, Oct. 18, visitors will be required to visit with inmates using a video system. All visitors will now be required to register by scanning their driver's license at the kiosk in the jail lobby.

Once you're registered, you or the inmate can schedule a time to meet. Visitors can use the video visitation from their home or at the jail.

Sheriff Jimmie McDuffie says this will help make the jail a safer place.

"We don't have to have an officer that moves the inmates back and forth and we don't have to have an officer that sits outside and verifies who everyone is when they come in and check their ID," said McDuffie.  "It's going to save us a ton of money by being able to do that."

Video visitation will be open every day from 8am to 8pm. Inmates get two 30 minutes visits a week for free, any additional calls at the jail are $7.50; visitations from home are $15.

For more information, call the Effingham County Sheriff's Office at (912) 754-3449.
