Spongebob filming to continue through weekend

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Spongebob Squarepants 2 filming will continue on Broughton Street this weekend, with new road closures that could impact the downtown area.

On Friday, Broughton Street will be closed to traffic and parking from Lincoln to Bull streets between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. There will be no parking on Bull, Abercorn or Lincoln streets between State and Congress streets.

Drayton Street will remain closed to traffic with re-routes to State and Congress streets until 8 p.m.

On Thursday, 1,300 extras were used from the area. About 350 security and safety personal and a significant part of the production crew was hired locally. WTOC spoke to people working behind the scenes Thursday who say it's neat to be able to work on a major production in their hometown.

"It's great to be on a show this large at home. It's pretty awesome. I think being local had a lot to do with me getting it," said Matthew Dixon, who's working on the film.

"There is a good amount. I am always happy to see local faces on a big production like this. A lot of people did come from outside the state, but we do have a lot of local people. They got good positions and pay. So I am happy about that," says William Hammargren, interim film service administrator.

Dixon says he can't wait to see his name in a theatre and hopes this is a good stepping stone to his future.
