HARDEEVILLE, SC (WTOC) -

A major highway in Hardeeville was shut down Friday morning because of an apartment fire. Fire crews had to pull hoses across US 17, shutting that down for several hours.

The damage to the units was extensive.

"The first unit was destroyed, the second has some smoke and fire damage, and the third was OK, it had some smoke damage," said Chief Dan Morgan of Hardeeville Fire Dept.

One of the apartments affected, housed a family, but they have another place to stay. The second unit was vacant. The third apartment was supposed to be vacant but that was not the case.

"The one unit was suppose to be unoccupied but we did have someone in there at the time. We are not sure the cause but police will start looking into that."

The  man inside was taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. Hardeeville police and the owner of the complex will try to determine what happened.
