CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Savanna-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department is on its way to meeting 2016 standards in DUI Technology.

The SCMPD received an $8,000 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety to purchase the Intoxilyzer 9000, a new breath alcohol tester.

SCMPD currently use seven earlier versions of the equipment to perform breath alcohol level testing, but due to evolving legal demands, the technology has becom obsolete. Use of the older machines will cease to be legal in 2016.

The Intoxilyzer 9000 conforms to evolving legal standards and is easier for officers to use.

Metro Police continue to work on replacing the other machines, and SCMPD's membership in the Southeastern Traffic Enforcement network qualified it to apply for the governor's grant for the first one.
