October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

CHARLESTON, SC (WTOC) -

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Palmetto Goodwill is encouraging employers to strengthen their workforces by hiring qualified people with disabilities. 

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, the unemployment rate among adults with disabilities is 14.1 percent, which is nearly twice as high as the rate for adults without disabilities.

Goodwill has trained and hired workers with disabilities for over 110 years. The Palmetto Goodwill served more than 37,500 people in 2012, including over 3,300 individuals with disabilities.

Goodwill provides job training, career and community based services to people with disabilities, those who need education or work experience and others facing challenges to finding employment.
