BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

The trial of a Lowcountry man accused of killing his girlfriend and her son continued Tuesday.

Earnest Daise watched as friends of Jeanine Mullen took the stand.

Some of Mullen's family and friends testified that she wanted to end the relationship with Daise and that he threatened her and her kids.

Two witnesses testified they overheard Earnest Daise threaten to kill her over the phone.

Alleen Porter said she had met Daise prior to the double murder and was aware of the domestic violence between him and Mullen.

"Volatile relationship. Just lots of verbal, physical abuse," said Porter.

Porter worked with Mullen at Joseph Shanklin Elementary School and was one of her closest friends.

"Jeanine was the type of person that would light up a room and at some point in her life, she was ready to make things better and she was that type of person who deserved better," she said.

One of Mullen's surviving sons also testified that his mother was ready to end to relationship.

The state and defense also questioned a witness named Jay Simmons regarding his whereabouts on November 15, 2009.

Simmons gave conflicting statements to law enforcement and then on the witness stand about whether or not he got a text message from Daise asking for a ride and how the defendant was acting on the night of the murder.

If a jury finds Earnest Daise guilty, he could face either life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

WTOC did talk with some of Jeanine Mullen's family members.

They were too emotional to talk on camera with us but they say she was a strong person who loved her kids.
