TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

The Coast Guard was on the North Beach area of Tybee Island Wednesday for their annual survival training.

Survival training consists of training for first responders, life raft training and survival items training in conjunction with pyrotechnic flares. The flares have the potential to reach 600 feet in the air, and all flares will be recovered by trainees or instructors on-site.

"In the event of an accident your training is going to kick in. It is important, especially at night, when you can't see, you need to know exactly where your gear is," said Chief Petty Officer, Shaun Legas, with the Coast Guard Air Station Savannah.

It consists of on-hand training.

"They will get in the water, they will actually board the raft, having to stay together. They have to help one another get in and out. We also have someone simulating injury."

No vehicles were permitted on the beach during the training, which will be from 8 a.m. until noon.
