Congressman Kingston opposes House legislation to reopen government

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

In a telephone interview with WTOC, U.S. Representative Jack Kingston said he was disappointed in a bill passed by Congress to end the partial government shutdown.

The bill, which passed 285-144 late Wednesday night, extends the debt ceiling through February 7. The government will be funded through January 15.

Kingston, a Republican representing Georgia's 1st District,  said he wanted to see a permanent solution instead of a short-term fix.

"It's only a temporary agreement, and I'm disappointed because if you look at the past 17 shutdowns, and the 5 past debt ceiling summits, you always come up with something that's going to change the direction of spending. And in this case, we're only re-opening the government," he said.

President Obama plans to sign the bill immediately.
