SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Day three of the Guy Heinze Jr mass murder trial resumed Thursday morning.

Heinze Jr's attorney Newell Hamilton told jurors and the courtroom that police showed a "reckless indifference" to the investigation and handling of evidence.

Police failed to log a pair of nunchucks or a hammer found near the mobile home which he says may have been used in the slaying.

Newell also suggested the mass murder was the work of a gang that had threatened to kill the family before.

The defense also argued that Heinze Jr was inappropriately interviewed because he was high on drugs and traumatized by the event.

Heinze Jr. has pleaded not guilty to the crimes of malice murder of eight people, including his father, and the aggravated assault of a 3-year-old boy inside a mobile home at New Hope Mobile Home park in August 2009.

Heinze Jr faces the death penalty if found guilty.

The trial continues Friday morning.
