SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department is looking into an assault which ended up with the victim turning the tables on the attacker. A woman reacted fast and effectively in a frightening confrontation at a southside intersection.

A Savannah woman told WTOC exclusively she pulled up to the corner at LaRoche and Norwood Avenue around 4:50pm Wednesday, when a man approached her car and tried to pull her out.

As he grabbed her, she says she grabbed a screwdriver out of the side of her door and stabbed him in the chest. She went on to say he ran away while she stepped on the gas and took off.

Workers at the day care where her child stays say she was shaken up.

"She's okay now. She was in hysterics. She has a long scratch down her neck where he tried to pull her out of the car," Jamie White said. "I don't know until it happens to me what you would do. You think you can do the right thing but hopefully I would grab that man knock him out and get out of there."

The victim was on her way to the daycare to pick up her child. Her daycare providers were concerned that police did not contact them to put them on lockdown for the protection of their children.

"We have a lot of little children here, day care and after school programs, and the protection of these children, we are accountable," White said. "We don't want anything happening to them. We want a heads up on what is happening in our area with these things for our children."

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police tell WTOC because so much time had passed between the incident and the time it was reported, no schools or daycares were notified. They did conduct a search, but since the daycare was a few miles from where the incident happened, officers say a lockdown was not necessary.

The suspect is still at large and it happened not too far away and just a few hours after a shooting near LaRoche and DeRenne Avenues.
