Georgia Power proposed rate increase goes before PSC

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Families across Georgia are preparing for a rate hike from Georgia Power. The company is proposing a $478 million rate hike.

Georgia Power said a new proposed fee specifically does not apply to anyone who already has solar panels, and instead keeps the rest of its customers from subsidizing a subset of solar power producers.

The fee would also not apply to anyone participating in Georgia Power's huge new Advanced Solar Initiative (first or second versions) or other Georgia Power solar programs that are already bringing hundreds of new solar projects to Georgia, according to the company.

The final decision is up to the Public Service Commission. If approved, the increase will be an estimated $8. The commision will decide if there will be an increase on Dec. 17.
