Sheriff: One dead in plane crash near Tifton, GA

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

The Tift County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that one person has died after a plane crashed in a field near Chula, GA.

Federal Aviation Administration officials now report the plane went down around 10 a.m. Friday morning near 462 Red Oak Road in Tifton, GA.

They say one person was on board the Piper PA-28 aircraft, which departed Merritt Island, FL and was headed to LaGrange-Callaway Airport in LaGrange, GA.

The pilot has not yet been identified, and the FAA is investigating.

We have a reporter headed to the scene and will update this story as we receive more information.

    A man accused of shooting of an Army captain in downtown Savannah in 2004 has received a guilty verdict from a jury.  A jury found Deon Jones guilty on of the felony murder of U.S. Army Captain Scott Corwin during a robbery near Monterey Square in 2004.
