CHARLTON CO., GA (WTOC) -

A major road through Savannah and Chatham County is seeing a population boom, and with it comes the need for public safety.

However, Savannah Fire's new Bradley Point Fire Station location still sets empty.

Exactly a year ago Savannah Fire broke ground on the new station, but today the only thing that sits on the site is weeds.

Residents in the area were excited to finally get a station in their area, but now some wonder if it's ever going to happen.

Zane Swilley has lived in the area for the last three years.

"I was a little concerned and wondering," he said. "There's so many residents beyond where I live, Bradley Point and what have you, that there's a need for fire protection and police protection."

On Thursday, one year after breaking ground, the city council approved the $2 million construction contract.

The hold up came because of the design concept, according to Savannah Fire. This new station is going to be the model for all future Savannah stations, and they said they wanted to get it right.

Swilley was hoping to benefit from the fire station's location.

"I was hoping that they'd put the fire department here and proceed. It would help with my homeowner's insurance as well, there's a deduction with it being so close, so I was looking forward to that," he said.

However, Swilley most likely won't get to enjoy that because he's selling his home. He just hopes that others will be protected in the near future.

The need for public safety is so great on this side of the county, a half mile from the fire station, the new West Chatham precinct will be built in the near future.
