LUDOWICI, GA (WTOC) -

The sign at Miracle Ranch Rescue says 'furry friends welcome here', but volunteers told WTOC that county leaders told them they aren't welcome in the neighborhood where they've been for two years.

Kennel supervisor Georgia Pontikakis said Monday that Long County Commissioners and code enforcement officers voiced no objections when they opened at the end of a dirt road in rural Long County in 2011.

Pontikakis said the shelter has received no written complaints or citations, but a volunteer was told earlier this month the kennel must close and remove all animals by Dec. 1.

WTOC contacted the Long County Commissioners' office by phone. Chairman Donald Long said he had been advised by the county attorney not to comment.

He said the county hoped to have an official statement by the end of the week.

Volunteers at the kennel Monday explained the dogs at Miracle Ranch are rescues and are brought back to health, then transported to the group's home state of New Jersey.

Pontikakis said the group has requested any county documents of complaints or violations against the shelter, but haven't received anything yet.
