A 23-year-old Savannah man is behind bars without bond after he knowingly infected a teenage girl with HIV.

Investigators say this wasn't a random act. Authorities said the girl had been in a relationship with the man for some time.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say Antonio Myawn Bacon Jr. is facing felony charges of statutory rape and reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person after knowingly infecting the teen.

"Kids grow up quicker than they used to," said Julian Miller, Public Affairs Administrator for Savannah- Chatham Metro Police.

Police say Baker has been dating a girl in her mid teens.

"I don't believe a minor can consent," said Miller.

According to representatives at the Rape Crisis Center,  rape victims have a long road to recovery.

"It's really difficult. It's a lot for an individual to recover from," said Kesha Gibson-Carter, executive director of the Rape Crisis Center.

Gibson-Carter says most victims know the person that raped them.

"Rape is essentially about power and control," said Gibson-Carter.

Gibson-Carter says the center offers classes to prevent these situations but she says parents play a big role in helping educate teens and young adults.

"We teach them the value of engaging in healthy relationships as well as being able to identify dangerous situations," said Gibson-Carter.

Bacon Jr. will go before a judge for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 31.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the SCMPD Special Victim's Unit at  912.651.6675.
