BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

After a week and a half of testimony from dozens of witnesses, the defense has rested its case and its closing arguments were given.

Solicitor Duffie Stone reminded jurors that this was not a murder committed in a drunken rage.

Stone said Earnest Daise knew exactly what he was doing when he fired three shots into Jeanine Mullen and her two sons, Waltfredo and Jeremiah.

Crime scene photos were shown that depicted "gruesome pictures of a gruesome crime committed by a gruesome person," said Stone.

The defense, however, asked the jury to consider the cycle of victimization that Daise suffered at a young age and the lack of a father figure in his life.

The defense also asked jurors to look for reasons not to kill Daise and to show mercy in this case.

The jury returned to the courtroom at 4:30 p.m. and handed down the sentence.

Daise has been sentenced to life in prison without parole in the murder of his girlfriend, Jeanine Mullen, and her son Waltfredo.

Said Stone, "He had many chances. The choices he made are what put him in prison for the rest of his life."
