SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The U.S. House of Representatives voted yes on a crucial bill that could determine Savannah Harbor's future for years to come.

The $8.2 billion House bill creates a roadmap for dams, harbors, river navigation and other water projects across the country for the next 10 years.

The bill passed with a lopsided vote, 417-3, and guarantees a $461 million dollar expansion for the Savannah Harbor.

Those funds come in addition to the $231 million the state of Georgia has already set aside for the project.

WTOC spoke with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal before the vote, and he expressed his optimism about the legislation.

"The deepening of the Port of Savannah is a project not just important to the Savannah area, but also to all of Georgia, and really all of the United States because that port services so many ports in the United States."
