Law enforcement blocks Magnolia street in Lee County

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

GBI agents joined Lee County Sheriff's officials and Leesburg Police Wednesday night for a road block on Magnolia Street.

That's near the area where someone shot into a deputy's patrol car Monday night, but the sheriff wouldn't say whether tonight's checks had anything to do with that investigation.

He just said they want to make sure drivers are following traffic laws and aren't carrying drugs.

"What's going on right here, right now is just the safety check on the roads, make sure people got seat belts, and their driver license is not suspended or anything else that may come up," said Reggie Rachals, sheriff, Lee County Sheriff's office.

Sheriff Rachals told us they issued a lot of citations Wednesday night. The deputy wasn't injured in that shooting. Investigators believe it was retaliation after a Leesburg Police officer shot and killed a suspect.
