BCSO issues trick-or-treating safety tips

Posted: Updated:

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Emergency Management Division reminds residents about staying safe during Halloween festivities:

Drivers are urged to be especially cautious and alert late Thursday afternoon and evening for pedestrians during trick-or-treating. Beaufort will be hosting its annual Trick or Treat in Downtown Beaufort event on Thursday.

Small children and parents will be walking around and getting in and out of stopped vehicles.

Note: Bay St from Newcastle to Carteret St, and Port Republic to Scott St will be closed to vehicular traffic from 4:15- 6 p.m.)

Visibility is key. The BCSO suggests wearing reflective materials, light-colored clothing, and using flashlights and/or glow sticks to ensure being seen by drivers.

Avoid masks or costumes that significantly obstruct vision or impede movement.

Parents should remind children to stick to sidewalks and crosswalks, avoid running near or into a road, and avoid crossing streets from between parked cars, according to the BCSO.

Drivers are asked to take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.

Children may move in unpredictable ways.
