Port Wentworth PD crack down on selling alcohol to minors

Posted: Updated:
PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) -

The Crime Impact Unit of Port Wentworth Police Dept. conducted an undercover operation on Oct. 18 to target the sale of alcohol to minors.

"The department received several complaints about businesses selling alcohol to underage customers. We turned the complaints over to our Crime Impact Unit and they developed an operation to combat the problem" said Director of Public Safety Matthew Libby.

An undercover police officer, only 20 years old, was sent into establishments that sell alcohol in Port Wentworth to try to buy alcohol.

When the officer was able to purchase alcohol, the person that sold the alcohol was arrested and charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Of the 21 businesses in the city of Port Wentworth that are licensed to sell alcohol, the officer visited 17 of them. Ten of those businesses sold alcohol to the officer.

Due to the unexpected number of arrests, the undercover officer was unable to visit four businesses, but they will be visited by undercover officers in future visits.

The businesses in compliance will receive a letter advising them of the operation and that the undercover officer was unable to purchase from them.
